How Reforestation Projects Restore Livelihoods and the Climate

The true impact of reforestation doesn’t just come from the numbers, such as trees planted, carbon, or hectares restored. We’re so fortunate, with our partners, to be part of the story of restoration projects in East Africa and Haiti.

What does that mean in practice? It means that through Green Sneakers’ partnership with veritree and our partners, making the decision collect athletic shoes in their communities, we’ve added to an amazing story around the world.

In short, by deciding to redirect your sneakers from the trash into the reuse economy, restoration projects have included planting trees, rebuilding ecosystems, and strengthening communities in places where climate challenges are very visible.

What Makes Modern Reforestation Projects Different

Not all tree planting efforts mean the same thing. Modern reforestation projects can mean several things. For example, they can be activities that combine science with community leadership and social impact to create job opportunities.

Instead of planting trees and leaving, restoration teams monitor survival rates, track biodiversity recovery, and document outcomes using geospatial data and field verification.

Between November 2024 and February 2026, through Green Sneakers, those who have participated in sneaker collections supported the following restoration:

  • 16,664 trees ordered for restoration
  • 7,502 trees verified by veritree
  • 4 hectares restored, which is roughly equal to 141 tennis courts
  • 153 workdays created for local communities

In short, behind every number is a human being participating in rebuilding their community and future.

Haiti Forest Restoration: Rebuilding Stability Through Agroforestry

In Haiti, environmental restoration directly impacts human resilience. Unfortunately, 1.4 million people have experienced displacement from their homes due to instability. However, reforestation projects in places in the Sud, Nippes, and Ouest regions provide a path.

Agroforestry, which integrates trees with crops, allows farmers to improve soil fertility. In turn, that optimizes the chances of healthy crops and allows families to diversify their incomes because they don’t have to rely on a single crop.

If you never thought that your athletic shoes could make an impact, think again. Every time you participate in the reuse economy, you help create opportunities for communities in Haiti and East Africa to rebuild, for example, by turning degraded land into commerce.

Reforestation in East Africa: Mangroves Protecting People and Planet

There was a time in Kenya and Tanzania when mangrove forests provided food security and even protection from storms. There were also employment opportunities for families. Unfortunately, urban expansion and overharvesting harmed that fragile ecosystem.

What ultimately happened was sustainability harm to coastal communities, which were left more exposed to flooding and storms due to the loss of mangroves. Economically, families lost the way they had to earn money to put food on the table.

Thanks to Green Sneakers’ partnership with veritree, together, we’re creating a different reality. Your gently worn sneakers have currency. They do two things: 1) They become inventory for people in developing nations. 2) They also help to plant trees in East Africa.

What Your Partnership with Green Sneakers Accomplishes

The athletic shoes and sneakers that you and your community no longer want have enormous value in the reuse economy. They are the path toward greater environmental and economic sustainability. But there’s more.

Bringing Forests Back to Life

At the global sites where veritree and Green Sneakers have designated as target locations, 20 different types of wildlife have been detected. Birds, coastal wildlife, bats, and reptiles have been documented, proving restoration projects work toward sustainability.

Climate Impact You Can Measure

Current reforestation projects supported by Green Sneakers’ partners are expected to sequester 2,578 tons of CO₂. That’s comparable to removing 560 cars from the road for one year.

Connecting Everyday Action to Global Change

By extending the life of gently worn sneakers, our partners are helping build the reuse economy. When athletic shoes get reused rather than trashed, they can make a significant impact on economic and environmental sustainability.

Why Verified Reforestation Projects Matter

Trust is an essential part of the equation for Green Sneakers. We know that we can’t necessarily believe everything we read, or even see or hear. We always have to verify. Green Sneakers is a program of the nation’s leader in athletic shoe reuse, Sneakers4Good. You can check it out here.

veritree is a leader in planting trees and environmental sustainability. Its verification system ensures that location data, species information, photographs, and ecological monitoring data and information are collected. It ensures outcomes are traceable, transparent, and evidence-based.

The most successful reforestation efforts aren’t done for headlines but for generations. In East Africa and Haiti, we’re all working together to support the rebuilding of communities and ecosystems. Every tree represents a story of recovery, resilience, and hope.
